Ghana is one of the leading countries and economies in Africa. It is rich in history and is home to the biggest open-air market in West Africa. For many African-Americans, Ghana is home, as it was one of the main ports for the transatlantic slave trade. For me, visiting Ghana was an indescribable experience; it was the only place in the world that felt like home.
*Note: I visited Ghana with a school-sponsored program so many of the activities are academic-related*
Accra
- Visit the University of Ghana
- Tour of the city of Accra
- Lunch at National Theater
- Visit Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum – guided tour
- Bead-making workshop at TK Beads
- Visit Dagara Music Center (Midia) – a haven for Ghanaian arts and culture. There were Kente cloth weaving workshops, instrumental workshops, dance workshops, cooking workshops, and cloth dyeing workshops. This center was a true cultivation of Ghanian culture and my favorite part of the trip
- Visit Central University College at Miotso
Kumasi
- Visit Okyenhene’s Palace
- Tour KNUST campus
- Visit Bonwire-Kente Village
- Visit Asantehene’s Palace Museum
- Visit the Cultural Arts Center
- Visit Kejetia Market – the largest open-air market in West Africa. Students were split up into groups of about six people. This larger than life market with its winding pathways, hordes of people, and buzzing activity, was a bit overwhelming, but ultimately a worthwhile experience.
Cape Coast
- Visit Asin Manso Slave River
- Kakum Rainforest – Canopy Walkway Experience
- Community Service at Future Leaders – we taught classes of local Ghanian children who couldn’t afford traditional school and it was truly an eye-opening experience
