13 Cheap Hotels in Asia

If you know me, you know I love a budget accommodation. I spent my month-long trip to Southeast Asia staying exclusively in cheap hotels. These hotels were equivalent in price to a hostel, ranging as low as $10 per night in Vietnam. Most hotels came with free breakfast, room cleaning, water bottles, activity recommendations, and complimentary transportation. I used Booking.com to book most of these accommodations. Keep reading to see how I made my trip affordable with these cheap options.

1. Ibis Bali Legian Street – Seminyak

Price – mid-priced
Plus – free breakfast buffet (mostly Asian food, egg station, toast), nice rooftop pool, located on a popular street in Seminyak, quick drive to popular area for night life, fast wifi connection, clean rooms and common areas
Minus – no American selection for breakfast 
Overall Review – Green

2. Pondok Massas – Ubud

Price – budget for Ubud
Plus – free breakfast (fruit, juice/coffee/tea, a choice from 3 mains dishes), nice pool, quiet, free shuttle to downtown Ubud, provided breakfast box when leaving for an early tour and missed breakfast (toast, boiled eggs, etc.)
Minus – poor wifi connection, not walking distance to downtown Ubud, a few bugs came into our room (the hotel staff took care of it right away)
Overall Review – Green

3. BEAT. Capsule Hostel @ Beach Quay – Singapore

Price – budget for Singapore
Plus – amazing location, friendly, water provided, free simple breakfast (toast, cereal, milk, juice, tea, coffee), view of the waterfront from the living room, quiet, not a party hostel, fast WiFi
Minus – check-in after 3 pm, showers were slightly dirty
Overall Review – Green

4. Apollo Inn – Penang

Price – budget
Plus – nice staff, water provided, clean towels each day, helped give activity recommendation, free simple breakfast (eggs, meat, toast, rice, cereal), rooftop terrace
Minus – poor WiFi connection, a small room with no window
Overall Review – Yellow

5. 1000 Miles Hotel – Kuala Lumpur

Price – budget
Plus – very friendly and helpful staff, great location to metro and restaurants, free cereal, toast, tea & coffee in the morning
Minus – no water provided, very small room, poor WiFi connection
Overall Review – Yellow

6. Panamee – Phi Phi

Price – mid-priced
Plus – great location, provided beach towels, 3-minute walk to the pier, close to market with food and souvenir shops, spacious room
Minus – hotel staff wasn’t very friendly
Overall Review – Yellow

7. Hallo Patong – Phuket 

Price – very cheap
Plus – balcony in room, walking distance to downtown Patong
Minus – hardest bed I’ve ever slept in, WiFi not strong on top floors
Overall Review – Yellow

8. Galleria 12 – Bangkok

Price – mid-priced
Plus – good breakfast buffet selection (with American and Asian breakfast options, strong WiFi connection, nice pool and gym, complimentary tuk tuk rides to Main street, very close to Asok BTS station, good location, provided water bottles
Minus – 5 minute walk from Main street if tuk tuk ride was unavailable
Overall Review – Green

9. Sheraton Orchid – Bangkok

Price – luxury
Plus – extended check out until 4 pm, nice rooftop with happy hour, two nice pools, beautiful hotel grounds along the river, complimentary riverboat ride to nearby attractions
Minus – taxi prices are inflated in this area
Overall Review – Green

10. Lee Chiang Hotel – Chiang Mai

Price – budget
Plus – friendly staff, graciously provided recommendations to explore the city, conveniently located near popular temple in Chiang Mai, good breakfast buffet, water bottles included
Minus – air condition was not working
Overall Review – Green

11. Hanoi Glance – Hanoi 

Price – budget
Plus – good simple breakfast buffet, water bottles provided, clean and nicely decorated room, walking distance to several attractions, good location, provided welcome drinks
Minus – located on a noisy street
Overall Review – Green

12. Beauty Guesthouse – Ho Chi Mihn

Price – budget
Plus – simple breakfast with eggs, located close to main street for nightlife
Minus – similar to a hostel, located in an alley off of the main street, accommodations aren’t similar to pictures online
Overall Review – Red

13. Apa Hotel – Tokyo 

Price – budget
Plus – efficient and automated check-in process, 25 min walk from Shinjuku, fair location
Minus – very very small room
Overall Review – Yellow
